Met Gala: Best and Worst Dressed (According to IG)

Met Gala: Best and Worst Dressed (According to IG)

The world is returning to normality, and in person red carpet looks are setting the internet in fire once again. The Met Gala is a case in point, a night for everyone to get lost in seeing their fave glossy icon. People love their celebs, but it’s the fashion that everyone is dying to see. The fashion data experts at Lovethesales.com reveal all.

The Love the Sales data team tracked likes from the top Met Gala Instagram fan accounts, to reveal the BEST & WORST outfits from the last 4 Gala’s according to Met Gala fans.

As we all eagerly await Monday night’s event and theme ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’, we thought what better way to commemorate the night than looking back on the stellar and ‘less-than’ stellar looks from the past 5 years and using data to really delve into the hits and misses.

2019: Camp notes on Fashion

2019-best.jpg

Best dressed: Janelle Monae wearing Christian Siriano.

What’s better than a hat, why three of course! Janelle Monae dazzled the Met that year with her avante garde approach to fashion. In a nod to Monet, the singer deconstructed her garment challenging contemporary ideas of the modern silhouette.

The true campiness came from the additional hats and the finer details like the eyes falling off the sleeves. It’s not hard to see why Vanity Fair covered her dress. To you Ms. Monae, hats off.

Worst dressed: Karli Kloss wearing Gucci.

What would you get if you combined supermodel Karli Kloss, Gucci and the Met Gala. If you thought of a stunning fashion look for the ages you would be mistaken.

Though understated outfits can work, not when the theme was CAMP. For such an event, the short gold cocktail dress felt rather dire, with several Instagram users stating she felt like a ‘fashion nova’ model, probably not the best choice.

2018: Heavenly Bodies, Fashion and the catholic imagination

Best Dressed: Chadwick Boseman wearing Versace

Not a day goes by when social media doesn’t think of Boseman’s pious suit. Wearing a Versace suit seems fashionable enough, but Boseman combined the theme of the Met Gala whilst wearing a traditional male silhouette. Adorned with trimmings of gold, it felt straight out of the renaissance.

Social media seems to agree with Instagram user @JAjueny - speaking of the suit as the best men’s fashion ever from the Met. It received an insane 134 thousand likes on Instagram.

Worst Dressed: Katy Perry wearing Versace

Whilst the theme may have been heavenly bodies, Katy Perry’s angel look was considered too on-the-nose.

Her metallic thigh-high boots and matching golden dress was understated yet is not the reason for the fashion police to be called. Her decision to attach 6 ft tall angel wings proved dire, as they blocked the carpet and even hit Katy’s own stylist.

2017: Rei Kawakubo x Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.

Best dressed: Zendaya wearing Dolce & Gabbana

Just because it’s a night commemorating a specific designer does not mean you have to wear only their designs, a statement turned fact by Zendaya.

Wearing a yellow bardot dress with an exotic parrot print, you would think she stepped right out of Casablanca. From the coiffed afro to the minimal jewellery, is it any wonder that Vogue said she won the night?

2017-worst.jpg

Worst dressed: Mandy Moore wearing Michael Kors

For a night of colours and prints, Moore’s all black attire felt far too bleak in contrast with the vibrancy of the night. Wearing Michael Kors, the look aimed for an asymmetric approach with its sleeves and earrings. Yet, as Entertainment Weekly also wrote, the mismatched pieces felt they were a mistake rather than a fashion choice.

2016: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.

Best dressed: Beyonce in Givenchy

When does Queen B ever fail to impress? Never. In her cinched dress, the neutral colours alongside the small beading work made the dress seem extravagant and gave the look of small LED lights flashing.

Worst dressed: Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton

The short French inspired bob may have been the standout moment for Michelle Williams, yet speaks volumes on the outfit choice. Wearing a sports luxe inspired outfit, the panelling and questionable ankle boots made the garment feel like it was from an episode of Project Runway, rather than the Met Gala.
